Friday Football Frenzy--The Playoff Edition!!

The playoffs are here! All nine... NINE (!!) classifications get underway with plenty of local and area teams in action Friday night.

Local fans have several options if they want to stay in town and hit a game... undefeated Parkway will make their shortest road trip of the postseason when they visit Captain Shreve at Lee Hedges Stadium. Northwood hosts Benton in another rematch from the regular season.  District 1-3A champ, Evangel hosts Loyola from District 1-4A in a Division II Select matchup.

Can't make it to all of those games, can you? Perhaps you don't even have the time to hit one contest.

Have No Fear! Friday Football Frenzy is here... to help!  Darrell Rebouche and I continue the Frenzy in the playoffs! Listen to Newsradio 710 KEEL from 8-10:30 pm and we will keep you updated on all the games involving schools from our area, including those first round match-ups outside the immediate area.

In games involving schools from just outside Shreveport-Bossier serving as first round hosts for week one of the playoffs, Ruston takes on Natchitoches Central in Lincoln Parish; The top-seed in Class 2A, Many, welcomes Delcambre; Lakeside takes on Northeast in Sibley and Red River awaits South Plaquemines in Coushatta. Plain Dealing, in Class 1A, rolls out the red carpet for Ringgold.

There are several road warriors along the Red River who will hop aboard buses bound south for round one games. In Class 5A, the Airline Vikings will be unfriendly guests of Covington and Haughton hopes to be rude visitors at Ponchatoula.

The 4A bracket features some potential upsets involving schools from the 3-1-8. If Fair Park rediscovers the spark that led to a 6-and-0 start to the season, the Indians will be a tough out at Franlinton. Woodlawn has a legit chance to not just scare DeRidder... the Knights can make this a road trip to remember. North DeSoto's offense is a pain in the butt to prepare for.  I have a feeling the Rayne Wolves will be reaching for the Preparation H after the clock strikes 00:00 at the conclusion of the fourth quarter.

Mansfield visits Kaplan and North Webster travels to Iowa in the 3A grouping.  Both the Wolverines and Knights have enough talent in the backfield to score ample points... if the two defenses show up and play with some ferocity, each will see a second week of post-season play.

Haynesvlle, the top seed in Class 1A has a BYE in round one. Logansport isn't so fortunate as the #19 seed heads to Elton.

We hope to have correspondents at 90% of the games involving our local and area schools.  I know we need someone from Logansport to help us out and perhaps a Mansfield fan, parent, or administrator making the trek with the Wolverines to chip in and help as well.

Friday Football Frenzy--the Playoff Edition---presented by Chevyland, from The Orthopedic Clinic/Bone and Joint Clinic Studios on the patio of Rotolo's airs live on NEWSRADIO 710 KEEL from 8-10:30 pm! You can listen online as well (www.newsradio710KEEL.com) or using the "Radio Pup" app on your smartphone.

Can't wait! It's Friday Football Frenzy... it's the playoffs! Join us!

Fletch Gives Consequences for Wins/Losses in Tonight's Games

1. Airline(5-4, 3-1) at Parkway (8-0, 4-0)
AIRLINE NEEDS A WIN TO BOOST THEMSELVES INTO HOSTING A HOME GAME IN POST-SEASON... AS IT IS, THEY LOOK DESTINED TO EITHER VISIT CENTRAL (br), COVINGTON, ZACHARY,  MANDEVILLE OR COVINGTON.   PARKWAY LOOKS LIKE A LOCK FOR THE NUMBER TWO OR THREE SPOT WITH A WIN... THERE IS A CHANCE THEIR FIRST OF POTENTIALLY 5 CONSECUTIVE GAMES ON THE ROAD IN THE PLAYOFFS, MIGHT START WITH A TRIP TO LEE HEDGES TO FACE SHREVE.

2. Minden (4-5, 3-3) at Northwood (8-1, 6-0)
UNOFFICIAL POWER RANKINGS LEAVE MINDEN ONE SPOT OUT OF THE POST-SEASON---THAT FIRST GAME LOSS TO SOUTHWOOD IS KILLING THEM.  A WIN OVER NORTHWOOD WOULD MOST LIKELY GIVE THE TIDE THE BOOST THEY NEED TO PLAY AN 11th GAME... NORTHWOOD WANTS TO HOLD ON TO THAT HOME PLAYOFF GAME... SITTING UNOFFICIALLY JUST OUTSIDE THE TOP TEN, THE FALCONS WITH A WIN TONIGHT, WOULD MOST LIKELY FACE LAKESHORE, WASHINGTON-MARION OR MCDONOUGH #35----BUT THEY FACE EQUAL ODDS TO SQUARE OFF WITH EITHER NORTH DESOTO, BENTON OR FAIR PARK---BASED ON THE RANKINGS AS OF THURSDAY AFTERNOON

3. Evangel (7-1, 4-0) at Mansfield (5-4, 3-1)
MANSFIELD FACES A LONG ROAD TRIP IN THE OPENING ROUND OF THE 3A PLAYOFFS... EVANGEL JUST MIGHT TAKE ON LOYOLA OUT OF CLASS 4A... DISTRICT II OF SELECT PLAYOFFS FEATURE TEAMS FROM CLASS 3A AND 4A... RIGHT NOW, UNOFFICIALLY, EVANGEL IS NUMBER 5 AND LOYOLA IS NUMBER 12----IN THE PLAYOFFS, THE 5 AND 12 SEEDS WOULD MEET IN OPENING ROUND

4. Red River (7-2, 3-1) at Calvary (5-4, 4-0)
CALVARY, THE NUMBER TWO TEAM IN THE DIVISION III SELECT RANKINGS, APPEARS SET TO HOST REDEMPTORIST, THE LOWEST SEEDED TEAM IN DIVISION III AS THE FIFTEEN SEED... TOP SEED IN THE CLASS WILL GET A BYE---UNLESS EPISCOPAL LOSES FOR THE FIRST TIME ALL SEASON, IT LOOKS LIKE CALVARY WILL BE NUMBER TWO.
RED RIVER LOOKS LIKE A LOCK TO HOST A GAME NEXT WEEK IN THE CLASS 2A FIRST ROUND... AND THEY COULD HOST THE HOMER PELICANS IF THE NUMBERS REMAIN THE SAME AFTER TONIGHT'S GAMES...

5. Haynesville (9-0, 4-0)  at Plain Dealing (5-4, 3-1)
*LAST TIME HAYNESVILLE WENT UNDEFEATED IN REGULAR SEASON--2000... THEY WON THEIR 14TH STATE TITLE TO CAP A PERFECT YEAR.  IN REGULAR SEASON, THEY OUTSCORED THEIR OPPONENTS 457-33 (45.7 TO 3.3 PER GAME); IN THE PLAYOFFS THEY SHUTOUT EVERY OPPONENT EXCEPT SOUTHERN LAB IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (24-21)... OUTSCORING THE OPPOSITION IN THE POSTSEASON 182-21 (36.4 TO 4.1 PER GAME)... RECORDED 11 SHUTOUTS INCLUDING TEN STRAIGHT LEADING UP TO TITLE GAME

6. Southwood (1-8, 0-4)  at Captain Shreve 2-7 0-4)
SHREVE CAN REACH PLAYOFFS WITH WIN... THEY ARE CURRENTLY #32 IN UNOFFICIAL POWER RANKINGS... HAVE PLAYED TOUGHEST SCHEDULE IN CLASS 5A. SOUTHWOOD HASN'T WON A GAME SINCE SEASON OPENER WHEN THEY SCORED ON THE LAST PLAY OF THE GAME TO BEAT MINDEN

7. Loyola 4-5, 2-4) vs. Woodlawn (4-5, 3-3)  at Indy Stadium
WOODLAWN: IS CURRENTLY INSIDE THE CUT LINE UNOFFICIALLY AT NUMBER 29 IN THE 4A PLAYOFFS... IF THEY LOSE TO LOYOLA, THAT WILL MEAN EITHER EXCLUSION FROM THE TOURNEY--OR A MATCHUP WITH  ONE OF THE TOP THREE SEEDS: NEVILLE, EDNA KARR OR LANDRY/WALKER

8. Huntington (1-7, 0-6) at Benton (4-5, 3-3)
HUNTINGTON WILL WRAP UP THEIR SEASON WITH TONIGHT'S GAME... BENTON COULD FACE NORTHWOOD, FRANKLIN PARISH, OR PERHAPS HEAD SOUTH FOR DATES AGAINST EITHER BREAUX BRIDGE, RAYNE, CROWLEY OR BELLE CHASSE...

Look what we saw on the lot at Chevyland!  Life is short- it's time to enjoy your drive to work!

9. North Webster (6-3, 3-1) at BTW (1-8, 1-3)
THE NORTH WEBSTER KNIGHTS ARE ALMOST SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF THE UNOFFICIAL POWER RANKINGS... THEY COULD HOST A PLAYOFF GAME NEXT WEEK WITH A WIN OVER BTW AND A LOSS FROM ONE OR TWO OF THIS GROUP:JEWEL SUMNER, LORANGER, BUCKEYE OR NORTHWEST.

BTW WILL FINISH THEIR SEASON TONIGHTAT LEONARD C. BARNES STADIUM...

10.North Caddo (1-8, 1-3) at Homer (2-6, 2-2)
NORTH CADDO IS ROOTING HARD FOR WHOMEVER IS PLAYING DELCAMBRE, BUNKIE AND ISTROUMA TONIGHT.  A REBEL UPSET OF HOMER TONIGHT MIGHT BE ENOUGH TO PUSH THE REBELS INTO THE TOP 32 OF THE CLASS 2A NON-SELECT RANKINGS... BUT A LITTLE HELP WITH THE SCHOOLS IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF THE REBELS WOULDN'T HURT.  HOMER HAS AS SPOT LOCKED UP IN THE PLAYOFFS... AND THEY ARE ALSO MOST ASSUREDLY HITTING THE ROAD NEXT FRIDAY

11. Lakeview (2-7, 0-4) at Lakeside (6-3, 2-2)
LAKESIDE'S WILD 70-68 WIN OVER NORTH CADDO HELPED KEEP THE WARRIORS IN "HOST MODE" FOR NEXT WEEK'S 2A PLAYOFF OPENER---CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE TO THE LAKVIEW GATORS THOUGH... GATORS ARE A COUPLE OF SPOTS BELOW NORTH CADDO---AND WOULD NEED EVEN MORE HELP PLUS THE OBVIOUS---A WIN OVER LAKESIDE TONIGHT---TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.

North Webster's Coach John Ware is Superior's Coach of the Week!

We saw the light turn on last year with Coach John Ware's Knights and looked forward to seeing how the 2013 season would play out for them. A couple of early season losses, we feared, had dimmed the program's progress, but they flipped the switch just in time!! Swords drawn, they have triumphed over their last two opponents.  With their last win against Green Oaks (49-15) they proved they are playing to win... and by a large margin!

Friday Football Frenzy Report!

Parkway's Brandon Harris made big plays against Southwood! last night the newly crowned Mr Homecoming and Under Armor All-American talent was on display!  Parkway Alumni couldn't have asked for a better game in their return to their old stomping grounds.

Harris presented with Under Armor All-American jersey

http://www.shreveporttimes.com/article/20131018/SPORTS0101/310180015/Parkway-s-Harris-receives-All-America-jersey

After Parkway's win, we had Coach Feaster join us on the Impact864.com post game show:
Coach Feaster: Had to correct Brandon last week, it was good- other guys on the team need to hear me yell at him a little.
Feaster has a lot of respect for Southwood program. They got after them pretty good with blitz.
Parkway Panthers stand out players:
Brocrick Jefferson and Demetrius McAtee- receivers did well
Artavious Lynn 6'5" specimen has been on the rise. You notice him in warmups, "Whoa! Who's that?"
Side note: Kicker Avery Shoebridge and Corey Henderson have several college visits on the horizon

Tiger Droppings Comments on Brandon Harris:
- 8 of 13, 262 yards, 5 TDs, and 3 rushes for 62 yards and 1 TD per Parkway coach Emmett Beggs
- that's over 30 yards per completion and still 20 yards per attempt. Cam is going to have fun developing this kid.
- I expect BH to come in and push Jennings right away.
- y'all really think we let a true freshman start?
- It's unlikely, but...

Feaster is glad both Byrd and Parkway are undefeated because two undefeated teams always make for a more exciting showdown! Haughton is going to be waiting in the weeds for Parkway- he seems to think Haughton will give them a fight that won't be soon forgotten.
Tough teams like those (Haughton) just love to hear media talk about Parkway- fuels the fire, they want to be the team that knocks off Parkway. Makes for better games- win/win for both teams and their fans.

Airline Vikings set sail to Haughton--
It was battle on the high seas when the Viking ships pulled in to Haughton Harbor. Haughton didn't seem to be playing their usual high grade football and Airline took full advantage. In the last few minutes, the Vikes pulled somewhat of an upset win over Haughton securing their coach, Bo Meeks- a Superior Coach of the Week nomination.
Haughton's Jarred Craft missed game last night against Airline- may have been a difference maker, but Coach Guin confidently stated Haughton had the man power to cover the void. His brother, Jerrod Craft intercepted the Vikes to keep a 7-7 score going into the half. Later, an outstanding play from Haughton’s Micah Larkins as he returned a kickoff 65 yards for a TD to tie the game at 21-21 but the fresh, young Airline defense put a screeching halt to that momentum.
In the end the Vikes rallied their ship's sails and blew past the Buccaneers with a last minute TD pass from Jacob James to D'Juan Byrd.  The Bucs still had 2 time outs but just :21 seconds on the clock. However a fumble on the ensuing kickoff ensured the Vikes would raise their victory flag with a 28-21 win!

Benton vs Loyola
The Benton Tigers had a full out mauling when the Flyers came to play!  Jordan Shaffer attacked with aggression that leaves a mark, and was crowned Homecoming King at halftime!  It's still up for debate on who won it for the Tigers: Shaffer or Benton's grrrrreat defense! Loyola's Coach Alan Carter gave Benton's defense the win. He said his players are still struggling with their offense, but gave the Flyer defense credit for a strong fight! Benton wins 35-7.

North Webster vs Evangel
Evangel win:  24-6
Evangel Coach Byon Dawson Interview:
Evangel started off sluggish but Conner Curry got going and did well being patient and finding open man-patience in a freshman? Now that is impressive!
How is Little Jerry Tillery (Notre Dame Commit, Class of 2015)? He's is like the Godfather out there with those guys!
Set lofty goals- because if you aren't improving, you get stale
North Webster's touchdown earned on a run in third quarter.

BTW Coach: Kendrick Law joined us after his Lions recorded their first win of the season, a 22-11 takedown of Bossier.
Coach Law interview:
it was 8-8 then we just had to rile our boys up, stop making mistakes
Kick punt, go down there and let the ball hit them or pass interference
BTW had a chance to ice it
It was exciting- good feeling that has been a long time coming!
Next week is the Soul Bowl!
Do the kids get to enjoy the win or is it time to focus on the Soul Bowl?
To see your kids happy- especially a week before Soul Bowl, is why you coach the game!
We gave up our summer- 2 a days
I told them this is the way you are supposed to feel!
This win earns Coach Law a Superior Coach of the Week nomination!

Charlie Cavell, the voice of the Byrd Yellowjackets,  sitting in parking lot looking at scoreboard at Parkway (where his daughter attends) wishing it was next week already!
Deuce Casten (sophomore QB, filling in for injured Tyler Johnson) had some fumbles on the snap- but he is such a good athlete he can hit the mark- hit receivers in that spot that only they could catch it. For a FIRST START, against your BIGGEST RIVAL, during HOMECOMING GAME-- DEUCE played like an ACE!

Superior COACH OF THE WEEK nominations:
BTW- Coach Kendrick Law
Airline- Bo Meeks
North DeSoto -- guys debated this one for a while but
- Darrell says Coach Ab should be nominated
North DeSoto's Coach Ab (Abernathy) challenged his kids to be more physical... And they were. They ran ALL OVER with a MAXX effort you will be hard pressed to see elsewhere!
42-12 was the final score-- what a bruiser!

Superior Coach of the Week

For the first time since 1983 the Fair Park Indians open their season with 5 wins in 5 games! Mike Greene altered his offensive philosophy and got his entire squad to buy into his mode of thinking. The payoff? Maybe more than they expect.  Sure these young men are enjoying the cheers and getting a boost in the confidence department, but do they realize what they have done? Really?

"Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishment toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results." - Andrew Carnegie

Carnegie said it better than most, but Coach Mike Greene is breaking it down in a way that is motivating and uniting young men. That takes more than eloquent phrases in quotation marks. A lot more.  This school wasn't supposed to have a morning bell ringing to welcome students, much less a winning football team.  'Common people working together to attain uncommon results.' Sounds like the students at Fair Park are remembering what those words mean on their crest.

Those young men dressing out in Fair Park uniforms hopefully will have more success on the field, but more importantly we hope to see a ripple effect. We want to see these lessons carry them to a place of leadership in their school. Set a standard, start a trend. Hash tag success!

Restoring Fair Park to a school filled with pride instead of a school on the verge of closing is happening with a fresh wave of hard work. The momentum is there and spreading around a determined bunch of young men with their eyes on an achievable goal... A common vision that can be spread beyond the boundaries of a football stadium... No pressure, boys, we just expect climbing GPAs, exemplary behavior, more pep at the pep rallies, community involvement, higher goals set, etc.  Sound like a lot?  You can blame us for being fans- we want to see #success that lasts beyond your Friday nights. But then you have to blame yourselves. You've revealed that Fair Park has some serious young men that don't give up when things get tough, especially if there is an opportunity to win. And there is.

Fair Park Coach Mike Greene, we applaud your leadership and congratulate you on a job well done!

Benton's Coach Reynolds Moore is Superior Coach of the Week!

Benton's Reynolds Moore is turning the Tigers into a punkin' chunkin' team after years of running the Wing-T. The first year coach and his Tigers have had their growing pains with the new offense but the win over North Desoto is a clear indication Air Tiger is ready for takeoff!

Northwood's Jim Gatlin is Superior Coach of the Week Sept 27, 2013!

Superior Grill,Northwood High School,Friday Football Frenzy,2013,Sept 29,Coach of the Week

Northwood High School's head football coach Jim Gatlin
has pulled his team back up by the boot straps after losing starting quarterback Jerrick Peterson in the first half of the season opener.  They outmanned North Caddo in that season opener, but struggled in a 13-10 loss to Shreve the next week.

With his team at a crossroads Gatlin and his staff guided the Falcons to a 62-6 win over Bossier.  Labeled a district favorite prior to the season opener, the Gatlin Gang righted their ship restoring the confidence among the Falcon faithful!

Congratulations Coach Gatlin, for winning Superior Coach of the Week. This puts you in the running for coach of the year!

Captain Shreve's Richard Lary is Superior Coach of the Week Sept 20, 2013

Captain Shreve High School's head football coach Richard Lary...
and his Gator defense showed up big against Northwood, limiting the talented Falcons to 10 points.  The Gator's pulled out a thrilling 13and 10 win on Andrew Doughty's game winning field goal!

The Gator's defense has proven they will be competitive all four quarters, every Friday night! When they find some offensive dynamite, even the Swap People won't be able to contain this rough and rowdy crew!

Congratulations Coach Lary, for winning Superior Coach of the Week. This puts you in the running for coach of the year!

Loyola Coach Alan Carter is the Superior Coach of the Week!

Week 1 Top 10 Poll

There was a little movement in our Top 10 Poll... and that's what to expect from preseason to first game results.

Parkway dominated Calvary in week one, much to the surprise of most of us who had the Cavaliers tabbed as the number 6 team in the preseason.

This week's Top 10, as voted on my various media members in Shreveport:

Rank     School                        Votes                   Last Week
  1.         Parkway                     (79)                        1
  2.         Byrd                           (70)                        3
  3.         Haughton                   (54)                        4
  4.         Evangel                      (49)                        2
  5.         Airline                        (48)                        5
  6.         Northwood                 (43)                        7
  7.         Loyola                        (23)                       NR
  8.         Calvary                       (19)                       6
  9.         Mansfield                    (16)                       NR
10.         Green Oaks                 (13)                       NR
Also receiving votes: Captain Shreve (6), North DeSoto (4), Southwood (3), Minden (2), Bossier (2), North Webster (2).
Dropped Out: North DeSoto (7th last week), Bossier (9th last week) and North Webster (10th last week).

The poll was voted on prior to Thursday night's Loyola win over Green Oaks. The Giants have one big supporter among the media members...someone ranked G.O. 3rd!

Parkway has thoroughly impressed every voter except for one, who has the Panthers ranked 2nd.

The biggest mover this week is Loyola who appears in the Top 10 for the first time at #7. Byrd inched up one spot from 3rd to 2nd after blowing Zachary out of the water.

They're BAAAack!!

I'll never forget my sister calling me out of the blue one day, "Hey- I know you aren't into sports, but you have GOT to listen to this radio show-- it's hilarious!" Doubtful that I could grasp the meaning of anything sports related, I hesitated, but then was curious. Stacey knew me well- had to be something going on with this, so I gave it a try.

First I heard Darrell Rabouche's voice- I'd seen on the news before, but wondered if I would like him on radio because of his dry demeanor during 'Count and Direction' game and sports. Then Tim Fletcher chimed in on Darrell's subject.  I'd watched Fletch as well and did enjoy the funny things he referenced in his sportscast, but these two together? Talking on the radio?  Just didn't seem like it made much sense... That's where, thankfully, I was so wrong!

They were peanut butter and jelly! Burt and Ernie! Laverne and Shirley! Chocolate cake counteracted with a tall cold one (glass of milk)!  When Fletch would get messy with overreaching jokes, Darrell's dryness was there to sop it up and keep you from sugar crashing! They were the perfect complement! I was hooked!

Pretty soon I began to learn a little more about the games I had cheered for on the sidelines. I felt invested in Louisiana Sports. Pro players as well as local athletes began to develop personalities as Fletch & Rebouche discussed them with ease.  With literally DECADES of history in their caches, I felt my Northwest Louisiana roots deepen as they gave back stories of the schools and their programs that added a dimension I didn't know it existed!  I went out to catch a Bossier football game to see a kid faster than anything they'd seen in the last 10 years. When the legendary Byrd and Shreve rivalry began to build, I bought a ticket and sat in the stands even though I'm a Haughton grad!

Years later, I married that crazy man with the hair and became to love the Rebouche clan like they are my own, so yes-- I'm biased. BUT I really don't think I'm alone in my excitement about their new show!  Thats right, I said it... their NEW SHOW!

Fletch and Rebouche are back together again!  From 8-10:30pm Every Friday Night during the 13 weeks of prep football, Tim Fletcher and Darrell Rebouche will be broadcasting LIVE from ROTOLO'S!

A LIVE audience radio show! When is the last time someone did that around here?  They'll be checking in with correspondents from all the games with halftime scores, details about big plays, coach's and player's interviews plus... Imagine this- one fan calls in from one side of the field after his QB throws for a TD that is called back for a penalty, then hearing from a fan on the OTHER side of the field that realizes they are getting a freak chance to win because of that penalty-- it's going to be INCREDIBLE RADIO!

POST GAME TRAFFIC JAMS turn into you falling in love with old school AM Radio when you are tuned in to 710 KEEL listening to Chevyland's FRIDAY FOOTBALL FRENZY!  Are you sitting in the stands waiting for your sophomore to gather up his band equipment after the game? Download RADIO PUP APP and tune into 1130 The Tiger on your phone!

Not quite ready to head home after the BIG WIN? Roll your posse over to Rotolos to take over the show with cheers!  It's going to be EPIC OUT OF CONTROL FUN!

LET THE FRENZY BEGIN!

If you are interested in having your business promoted on the ONLY Friday Football Radio Show, email GetFletchSports@yahoo.com. We buy the airtime, you buy the ad time, football fans listen, EVERYONE WINS!
